Stormwater Project

The Mayor and Village Board have been diligently working to prioritize stormwater projects throughout the Village, as identified by the linked studies performed by Hey & Associates. The Village has a strong partnership with the Stormwater Management Commission and works in partnership with various agencies to ensure land protection and growth. Based on the commissioned studies, the following projects have recently been undertaken.

  • Project 1: 15390 W Little St. Marys Road: Full detail about this issue and the proposal can be found on page 5 of the stormwater management study linked here. A 30-inch by 19-inch elliptical reinforced concrete pipe conveys flow under W Little St. Marys Road, just south of W. Old School Road. This area was impacted by the floodplain from the Des Plaines River, likely further inhibiting drainage when water levels are high. Proximity to the Des Plaines, recent regional trends of increased rainfall depths and frequency, and topography suggest the increase in standing water in this area, predominantly east of the road, is influenced by the current high-water tables. A solution was proposed which included installation of a secondary pipe, along with restoration and stabilization of the area. This project was designed and bid in 2023. The project was completed in late 2023.

     

  • Project 2: 27115 Meadowoods Drive: Full detail about this issue and the proposal can be found on page 6 of the stormwater management study. Open ditch flow from along N Meadowoods Drive is conveyed under Southwoods Lane in a 15-inch reinforced concrete pipe. The flared end section on the upstream pipe terminus has pulled away from the pipe connection, limiting capacity, flow, and leading to clogging. Replacement of this upstream flared end section was recommended to ensure full capacity and flow. This project was completed in 2022.

     

  • Projects 3 and 5: Oasis Park and Mettawa Lane: Full detail about this issue and the proposal can be found on pages 6-10 of the stormwater management study. More than 250-acres drains to the conveyance route under Mettawa Lane. Drainage concerns along this flow path include the overtopping of Oasis Service Road, structure flooding at 707 W Bradley Road and Mettawa Lane Roadway flooding. The Village-owned Oasis Park was identified as a location to provide stormwater storage on the upper watershed. Options were explored in this study to increase storage in Oasis Park to alleviate flood concerns to the extent practical, primarily focused on roadway overtopping at the three locations noted. Design and permitting are underway for this multi-year project. The Village has applied for grant funding to assist.

     

  • Project 4: W. Little St Marys Road: Full detail about this issue and the proposal can be found on page 13 of the stormwater management study. Across from Sapphire Riding Academy, a 12-inch corrugated metal pipe under West Little St. Marys Road had collapsed. In the interim, a 4-inch PVC pipe was inserted into the upstream side of the culvert in an effort to maintain some level of drainage. The existing pipe limited capacity, causing water to overtop W Little St. Marys Road. The culvert was recommended to be replaced. This project was completed in 2022 and included ditch improvements along Bradley and Old School Roads.
