Welcome to the Village of Mettawa Web Site.

The Village of Mettawa is unique in Southeast Lake County, with wide expanses of natural lands and development planned to nurture the flora and fauna native to the area.

Mettawa was incorporated in 1960 when its population was 118. The goal of those residents was to preserve the woodlands and open fields in the village. They planned for low (five acre) density development. They welcomed Lake County Forest Preserve development in the Village. Residents with horses were encouraged to stay, and today, Mettawa has maintained its equestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Since 1994, some commercial development has occurred near the intersection of Illinois Route 60 and Interstate Tollway 94. Development at this busy intersection provides significant revenue to the Village, which enables the Village Board to better protect and preserve the rural residential open space environment and quality of life for the rest of the Village.
